Dr. Xin Lu, the John M. and Mary Jo Boler Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, in the Boler-Parseghian Center for Rare and Neglected Diseases, has been awarded a Young Investigator Award from the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI).
Dr. Lu has a broad research program that seeks to understand and target the tumor microenvironment, a forefront basic and translational cancer research in the present day. In this grant proposal Dr. Lu seeks to address a problem that broadly affects difficult-to-treat cancers. Many drugs that can kill cancers are toxic but if they can be selectively delivered to the cancerous cell and released inside of them, then they will more precisely kill the tumor and harmfulness to healthy tissue will be reduced. Dr. Lu has proposed a strategy of coupling drugs to antibodies that can recognize targets on prostate cancer cells and test them in a mouse model that mimics the human cancer mutations, an area in which he is a leading expert.
The title of his proposal is “Novel Antibody-Drug Conjugates for Personalized Therapy of Lethal Prostate Cancer”. His findings are expected to have implications for treatment of a broad range of cancers including several rare cancers.
Congratulations to Dr. Lu for this richly deserved award!
