Dr. Michael Weiss, Chair of Biochemistry, Cowan-Blum Professor of Cancer Research, and Professor of Biochemistry & Medicine, Case Western Reserve University

Dr. Michael A. Weiss is a graduate of the Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences & Technology and MD PhD Program at Harvard Medical School. Following PhD research under the guidance of Prof. Martin Karplus (Harvard Department of Chemistry), Dr. Weiss trained in Internal Medicine at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital and joined the Endocrine Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Prior to his positions in Cleveland, Dr. Weiss was a junior-faculty member at Harvard Medical School (1988-1994) and Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Chemistry, and Medicine (Endocrinology) at the University of Chicago (1994-1999). Dr. Weiss has been a member of the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, Harvard Visiting Scholar and Sheldon Fellow at Oxford UK, past Chair of the NIDDK Board of Scientific Counselors, past chair of an NIH Study Section (pertaining to small-business grants in diabetes and reproductive endocrinology) and alumni member of an MIT Visiting Committee of the Corporation.
He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH), the U.S. Presidential Scholars Foundation, and the Summer Science Program (SSP; an international summer program for gifted high-school students). Dr. Weiss chairs the CMNH Health Sciences Advisory Committee and is Senior Vice President of SSP. At CWRU Dr. Weiss has appointments in the Departments of Biochemistry, Medicine (Endocrinology) and Biomedical Engineering. He holds the Cowan-Blum Chair in Cancer Research at the Case-Cleveland Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center.
