Notre Dame Integrated Imaging Professor Bradley D. Smith
Notre Dame researchers, including students and faculty members, are invited to nominate a fellow colleague to receive a Best Imaging Publication award. The recognition is offered by the Notre Dame Integrated Imaging Facility (NDIIF) to recognize those who utilize NDIIF equipment.
“Our goal with these awards is to highlight the variety of ways that Notre Dame researchers utilize the NDIIF’s equipment across campus,” said Bradley D. Smith, Emil T. Hofman Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and director of the NDIIF. “I encourage faculty, students, and post-doctoral scholars to consider nominating an imaging publication for this recognition.”
Two awards are offered on an annual basis: one for a peer-reviewed research publication that used the NDIIF imaging machines in Stinson-Remick Hall and another for a peer-reviewed research publication that used the NDIIF imaging machines in the Galvin Life Science Center or in Harper Hall. A nomination can be made by any author of a publication that appeared online in the 2017 calendar year. Winners will be announced in late April and a recognition certificate and award will be presented at the 5th Annual Midwest Imaging and Microanalysis Workshop, which will be held at Notre Dame on May 8, 2018.
Last year’s Best Imaging Publication winners were:
C. Shuck, J. Pauls and A. Mukasyan, "Ni/Al Energetic Nanocomposites and the Solid Flame Phenomenon."
- Eamonn Kennedy, a post-doctoral scholar collaborating with Keough-Hesburgh Professor Gregory Timp in the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Biological Sciences, for his study addressing a major limitation of transmission electron microscopy, whereby living cells cannot be maintained under the high vacuum imaging conditions.
- Christopher Shuck, a graduate student working with Professor Alexander Mukasyan in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, for his work using a Focused Ion Beam instrument to collect thousands of images of the nanocomposite Ni/Al system with nanometer accuracy.
